The Subaru Solterra will be the brand’s first EV

It doesn’t feel like there’s much hype around Subaru at the moment, especially in the UK where we aren’t likely to see the next-generation, 228bhp BRZ. Boo.

However, we are being treated to a new, all-electric, C-segment SUV in 2022. Hooray!

Alright, so there’s not much to get excited about on the face of it, but if Subaru is embracing the electric future then maybe – just maybe – it’ll be tempted to offer us something a little sportier further down the line. Here’s hoping.

The new SUV will be Subaru’s first, competing with the likes of the Kia e-Niro, Peugeot e-2008 and countless other electric cars that are beginning to flood showrooms.

It will be built around the e-TNGA platform that Toyota has created for its upcoming EVs, effectively making it a twin to whichever production car is spawned from the Toyota bZ4X concept we saw last month.

We don’t know much about how it’ll perform yet but Subaru has hinted at all-wheel drive, which suggests electric motors on each axle for bona fide usefulness off road.

As for the name, Subaru has smashed together the Latin words for ‘sun’ and ‘earth’ to produce Solterra, which shows the company will “appreciate mother nature and further advance the form of coexistence with it”. Nope, us neither.

The Solterra will be on sale in Japan, China, the US, Canada and Europe mid-way through next year. Excited?
