Samsung Galaxy Z Flip sales go up in March as the Galaxy S20 flagships struggle

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip (which launched in mid-February) seems to be doing better than the company’s first foldable phone – 230,000 units were sold in the month of March alone, 56.1% up from the February numbers. For comparison, Samsung sold 400,000 Galaxy Folds in all of 2019.

Still, that’s a minor win as the big money maker, the Galaxy S20 series, is not doing so hot. A report from Korea states that sales are 35% down from what the S10 managed last year.

While COVID-19 related lockdowns certainly had an effect, the overall sales of Samsung smartphones are down 22.4% – a steep drop, but not as big as that suffered by the flagship line. In total the company sold 89.46 million units this March, 4.3% down compared to February.

Apple, which like Samsung is dependent on Western markets, saw a 23.4% year on year drop in sales for March with a total of 10.14 million units sold. That’s nearly a quarter down from the February sales.

Meanwhile, Huawei is showing signs of recovery with a month-to-month increase of 26.6% as the company’s key market, China, is already recovering.

Samsung isn’t so lucky as its key markets remained closed in April, it reportedly expects an even bigger drop in sales.
