Verizon Launches $40 Phone Plan Using ‘Yahoo Mobile’ Brand

2 min read

We’re not sure who this is catering to, but Verizon is launching a mobile phone service through the Yahoo brand.

The service is called Yahoo Mobile, and it’ll offer subscribers unlimited data, calls and texts for $40 a month on Verizon’s network. In addition, the plan comes with access to Yahoo Mail Pro, the ad-free version of the email service, which comes with 1,000 GB of storage.

“With the launch of Yahoo Mobile, we are continuing to evolve our business by bringing a new, personalized Yahoo experience to the market that feeds our users’ passions, and also attracts new audiences,” CEO of Verizon Media, Guru Gowrappan said in today’s announcement

Back in 2017, Verizon acquired Yahoo to help it expand into the digital advertising space. So the unveiling of today’s mobile phone plan may be an attempt to get more users on Yahoo properties to increase ad revenue.

Still, we’re doubtful free access to the $3.49-a-month Yahoo Mail Pro will lure anyone to try out the new service. However, the $40 monthly rate for unlimited data may entice consumers looking for a cheaper plan.

There are some caveats though. For instance, you’ll be restricted to Verizon’s 4G LTE network at a time when the carrier has been rolling out its faster 5G service across the country. So expect download speeds of about 5 to 12 Mbps, says the FAQ page for Yahoo Mobile. The carrier can also throttle your connection speeds when the nearby mobile data traffic is high.

You’ll find no family plan either. But on the plus side, Yahoo Mobile will give subscribers free access to Verizon’s mobile hotspots whenever available, although speeds will be capped at 5 Mbps. In addition, the carrier says you can cancel the plan whenever you want.

While Yahoo Mobile may sound a bit novel, the new subscription plan from Verizon appears to be quite similar to Visible, the company’s other low-cost $40 a month package. It too offers customers unlimited data, phone and text on Verizon’s 4G LTE network.

To sign up for Yahoo Mobile, you’ll need an account with Yahoo, which anyone easily set up. For more information on the cheapest phone plans, you can check out our guide.
